I have been gone for a few days, on the road to Northern California. Did anyone miss me?
Well I must say that I truly needed the break, and I was able to pass on some prospecting knowledge to a couple of 30-something Santa Ana boys (Dennis and Steve). We hit Shasta, Trinity, and Humboldt counties, so much to see in Nor Cal so little time.
Here are some photos of the trip, and a brief travelog:
Started out from Santa Ana CA, Thursday, June 25, 2230hrs.
Arrived BLM office Sacramento CA Friday June 26 0500hrs.
Breakfasted at the Waffle Square (had Steak and Eggs), and killed a few hours until the BLM Public Room opened. Myself and Dennis spent two hours researching mining claims in the northern counties while Steve grabbed some shut-eye. Departed Sacramento CA 1030hrs, headed for Redding CA.
Saw a bit of Shasta Co., but we were in a hurry to get to our first camp site, so on to Trinity Co. Arrived in Big Flat CA at about 1930hrs, made camp, Dennis cooked some killer cheeseburgers, and it was all a very good start of our mini-adventure.
On Saturday June 27, I woke to bacon and eggs and the Trinity River! We started digging soon after breakfast and farted around for five hours or so with sluicing and panning and such the like. Made a few friends down at the river and some of those folks trickled by our camp site that afternoon/evening, it is very fun meeting good people. Dennis cooked up a slow cook stew for us that evening, wow can that boy cook! *Injury report: while swimming I tore up my knee on some submerged boulders… ouch.
Sunday Morning June 28, we broke camp and headed back to Big Flat for our White Water trip, Oh Yeah rafting class 3+ rapids!! We took a half day trip, our guide (Pete) was the best and I would recommend Wilderness Adventures (Soon to Be renamed "Big Flat Rafting") without reservation, they are a great company and make the trip down river a joy. The phone number for Wilderness Adventures is (800-323-7238). Thanks again to our guide Pete!
After rafting we headed for the Lost Coast (Humboldt Co) and our dinner plans… We ate at the Samoa Cookhouse just outside of Eureka CA. The Samoa Cookhouse is a Lumber Camp style cookhouse and they serve just one meal, but it is all you can eat, so that balances out the lack of choice. Oh and is the food ever so good.
We then headed for the Coastal Redwood groves south of Eureka and got in to a campsite at about 2100 in the Hidden Creek Campground, I did not even pitch a tent, instead I decided to test my British Army sleeping bag, and slept on the picnic table. Falling asleep watching the stars move over 300-400 ft. treetops is something everyone should get to experience. The sleeping bag system worked very well, and I slept right through the night.
Monday June 29, spent most of the day hiking and driving along the Avenue of the Giants, lunch was a picnic by a lake after we transitioned onto Highway 20 heading back inland.
The rest of the trip was road hours back down I-5 to Orange County listening to the Kottonmouth Kings (Over and Over and Over). We got back at 0430 Tuesday June 30.
