The full of the title to the documentary is:
D.I.Y. or DIE: How To Survive as an Independent Artist
I would like to share this excellent documentary that I’ve enjoyed and learned from with everyone. The best part of the dealio is the film maker, Michael W. Dean, has put the entire film on YouTube, in eight parts, so you can watch it for free. I will provide links to all eight at the end of the piece.
The film celebrates the Independent American Artist and their Do It Yourself attitude. Featuring interviews and performances from; Musicians, Cartoonists, Circus Performers, Sculptors, and Painters, Like:
Ron Asheton (Stooges)
Dave Brockie (Gwar)
Matt Enger (Painter & Musician)
Mark Enger (Painter & Musician)
Ian MacKaye (Fugazi)
Richard Kern (Filmmaker)
Lydia Lunch (Writer & Artist)
J Mascis (Dinosaur jr.)
Jim Rose (Jim Rose Sideshow)
Madigan Shive (Bonfire Madigan)
Mike Watt (Minutemen)
And two dozen more fine folks.
The width and breadth of the topics covered with these artists is interesting and enlightening. From What does D.Y.I. mean to them, to Integrity, to their Self-Definition.
Personally I gained much from viewing Mr. Dean’s film, and Kudos to him and his crew. It really instigated a desire to step-up my own fledgling film-making endeavors. The latest video short I just finished editing, actually has an overarching theme and some subtle (Yes I said subtle!) audio/visual tricks and a heavier hand in the “cutting room“. That video will be uploaded to YouTube and linked in my next article, a Foto-Friday Walking Tour that will be ready for tomorrow, hopefully.
Here are the links to the complete Documentary… Please read the video info in the pull down window if you enjoy the film, and support an independent artist!
